Volunteer:
I had previously participated in a variety of community-based volunteer activities through my local cultural community, although these activities have very little association with recreation therapy. These opportunities have given me practical skills—such as communication, teamwork, organisation, community engagement, leadership, and encouraging participation—that are pertinent to my evolving professional practice.Due to practical and academic obligations, I haven't had many opportunities to volunteer across the course of the year. Attending volunteer opportunities has been significantly challenged, in particular, by the lack of dependable transportation.
Additionally, I carried out my internship in recreation therapy from June to October, which required a significant time and travel commitment. Because of this, I have not been able to fulfill the evaluation criterion of engaging in three distinct volunteer experiences within the last year. Instead of sharing experiences that I haven't had, I think it's crucial to recognise my prior community volunteering experiences and consider the abilities and information I have acquired from them.
In the past, I have supported cultural dance events in the community, helped raise funds for yearly basketball and football competitions, and took roles in Saturday BBQ and fundraising events at local parks, outside stores, and beaches over a period of two months. Collaboration with fellow community members, interaction with a wide spectrum of individuals, activity planning, and active participation in community events were all necessary for these experiences. I gained an understanding of the importance of movement, music, cultural expression, social connection, and involvement in producing meaningful experiences for people and communities through taking part in cultural dance events.
My awareness of sport as a recreational activity that can foster physical exercise, social interaction, teamwork, and community engagement has grown as a result of my participation in football and soccer fundraising events. In a similar vein, taking part in neighbourhood barbecues offered chances for improving interpersonal communication and collaboration abilities while fostering a setting that promoted social engagement and community relations.
Despite not taking a role in a formal recreation therapy setting, these experiences have helped me better understand a number of concepts that will guide future recreation therapy practice. They specifically illustrated the significance of developing inclusive, socially interesting, culturally significant, and easily approachable participation opportunities. Additionally, I gained more self-assurance in my ability to interact with others, collaborate with others, adjust to various circumstances, and participate in activities that foster wellness and social relationships.
I intend to explore options for more volunteer activities in the future that are more closely related to recreation therapy. I am aware that volunteering can offer worthwhile chances to increase my professional experience, enhance my practical abilities, and gain a better comprehension of how recreation can promote engagement, wellbeing, quality of life, and social connections among a variety of populations.
If you have a volunteer opportunity that aligns with my skills in recreational therapy or community engagement, please feel free to reach out via email or phone number in my resume or bottom of the home page.
